Subject: Transition Training Thank You!
I just got back from two and a half days of transition training with Chris to allow me to fly my RV7-A safely for the first time. I highly recommend him and his program. His vast RV knowledge and calm demeanor made for the perfect instruction environment.
On the first flight day his instruction focused on getting to know the airplane’s behaviors by smoothly performing maneuvers such as climbs and descents to given altitudes, steep turns to the left then right, turns around a point, demonstrating how the RV will behave in aggressive and subtle stalls (e.g. in the pattern if I let the airspeed drop too low), and practicing (at altitude) how to transition from cruise to entering and flying the pattern.
For my specific case I am new to flying with a constant speed propeller so Chris continuously instructed me on the different Power and RPM settings to use for the different flight regimes. I was amazed how well these work to transition from cruise to the correct airspeeds/attitudes/altitudes for each leg of the pattern.
The second flight day was focused mainly on pattern work. Here again I got to see how well his different Power and RPM settings made flying the pattern in the RV very predictable. He also instructed me on how to flair the RV into and hold in ground effect allowing the RV to touch down with the nose gear touching down last. A small part of the second day was flying through some shallow winding canyons to see the smooth maneuverability of the RV. I definitely had the RV smile on during that.
Thanks again Chris for a more than worthwhile two and a half days,
George Truesdell

Subject: Re: transition training availability next couple weeks?
In the summer of 2024, after having the chance to fly an RV (and catching the RV “grin”) I purchased a Vans RV-7A, located in the Midwest. I’m based in Central California so I knew this would be a little bit of a journey to bring the airplane home. I’d done my homework on insurance checkout requirements well in advance, so I knew what I was getting into.
Originally, I’d planned to get transition training with a CFI who hand flown the airplane I’d bought, but his availability was months out. The seller recommended I look at the Vans-recommended CFIs who specialize in transition training for RVs; I saw Chris was in Boise, and that was close enough to South Dakota where my airplane was, so I sent him an email. Chris responded right away, and I have to say this was a perfect introduction – Chris is an EXCELLENT and patient communicator. Not just in the cockpit, but in all the discussions leading up to actually flying!
Before we started flying, we spent a couple hours talking through what the insurance requirements were, but also what I felt I needed the most work on. Chris understood very quickly where I needed to focus, and did a great job tailoring my transition training to my strengths and weaknesses. I completely enjoyed every minute of flying with him – he’s got a great sense of humor and kept the lesson lighthearted and fun. Most importantly, I felt very confident in my ability to safely fly the RV7A after we were done, and to make the cross-country trip of a lifetime home. I’d recommend Chris to anybody who needs transition training – spend as much time as you can learning with him – it’s well worth the effort to get to Boise for it!

Chris’s training saved my life on my first takeoff and forced landing in my new to me RV-6A. Picking it up after purchase, on the first flight, I had a complete loss of power about 80 feet above and half way down the runway. Fresh off of Chris’s training, I was able to dive back down, flared flat, held, touched down and stopped about 100’ from the end of the runway. My prior 800 hours were in a Mooney that lands very different and I’m not sure I would have had a successful outcome without Chris’s training in the RV. When picking up a new plane, especially an experimental, don’t trust anything until you get to know all its individualized secrets!
Unfortunately, my scheduled training with Chris ended up on 106 degree days and smoky skies in Idaho. He adjusted his schedule so we could fly early in the morning to avoid the heat. His calm and methodical approach made it easy for me absorb what he was teaching. His 7A is immaculate and sets the bars for others. After sorting out the issues in my 6A, the flying characteristics are near identical to his. I’m happy to join the RV owners club and Chris has set me up for success. I’m forever grateful for Chris!
Clearly, I highly recommend his program to anyone if you built yours or are buying one!
Thanks – Paul

Chris,
As to you and your training, thank you!
In our early negotiations, the plane’s current owner, Roger Hooper, strongly encouraged me to get some transition training to fly the RV. Though not a difficult plane to fly, he suggested that an RV (his RV-4) may be different than what I’m accustomed to flying, and transitioning to an RV is a serious endeavor that requires a sharpening of pilot skills. So…
Chris, I wholeheartedly recommend your transition training. You were thorough, professional, approachable, and timely. You may recall, before we met, I had never been in an RV, much less experienced ‘the grin.’ Though I had plenty of flight time, flying with you, walking through the transition process, and becoming familiar with the shortwing landing/stall characteristics of the RV was a blast. I quickly reached a level of proficiency and feel confident that I will enjoy flying my -4 from the first takeoff.
Please feel free to use the quote above on your site. Attached is a photo of the plane, also for your use. If you prefer, I can send another one—including me in the photo—when I pick up the plane. I sincerely enjoyed flying with you and look forward to being part of the RV community.
I wish you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving,
Kevin

Thank you Chris for doing a great job teaching me about the RV. You made the flying fun and very educational. Your easy mannerisms and ability to reach others at their level is wonderful. After 30 years in teaching, I can say there are not many who have the people skills needed to make you feel relaxed and confident while learning new skills such as you do. It was truly wonderful to share time with you in your beautiful airplane. It was more than fun and very thorough.
Thanks again my friend.

The pleasure was all mine, Chris! I didn’t get much in the way of pictures but would be happy to provide you with a glowing review as you continue to grow your business and do Van’s proud. Your techniques were invaluable and I truly enjoyed your teaching style, clear piloting skillz, sense of humor, and envy-worthy hangar full of toys. By far one of the most fun, low threat but knowledge rich instructional experiences I’ve ever had.
I so appreciate how quickly you helped me obtain the training I needed to confidently fly my new toy and seize the opportunity to acquire it. Fly safe and come see me at KCRQ any time! If you can instruct in the Glastar or Carbon Cub, perhaps you’d be down for a Boise BFR in the next couple years??? I’d love to add that tailwheel endorsement finally!
Yours Aye,
Steve

Hi Chris,
It is very nice and useful that i had taken the RV transition program that you had customized for new RV builders or owners I can say that what you are doing is a great service that is an excellent fit for any RV builder or any new RV pilot.
Within a short period of time you had changed my apprehension whether i will be able to safely fly a fast experimental RV using stick control especially while landing, when i had hrs of practice only with the use of yoke in slow certified Cessna172 or side stick in slow Cirrus SR20 to be a confident and safe RV pilot.
I will be back next year to get more comfortable with the RV in some of the unusual attitudes recognition and recovery so that i can safely fly around the globe in a couple of years once i complete my RV-14A build in 2024-25.
The training you provide removes the task saturation aspect while flying an RV and it increases the fun in flying an RV.
Thanks for you help and will be back soon.
Cheers

I just finished my RV-7A and received my Airworthiness Certificate. It was time for some transition training. Being a rusty pilot who is getting back into flying after 16 years, I took multiple lessons in all types of airplanes at our local flight trainingschool in Rochester, New York. When researching an instructor for the transition training, the Van's website led me to Chris Droege in Boise Idaho. Chris' aircraft is also a RV-7A with the same engine and prop. I had no issue with going all the way to Boise to train in an airplane as close to mine as I could find. This turned out to be a great decision. Chris put me at ease right away. My apprehension at my skill levels faded as we practiced maneuvers again and again. The retention of techniques and numbers came easy as Chris continually gave me input and guidance throughout the program. Chris' style of training was just what I needed and I left, confident I could fly the airplane without issues. I am looking forward to getting my bird off the ground and applying the techniques I learned with Chris. If this testimony doesn't sway you to fly with Chris, just add beautiful scenery and great "fun flying" along the valleys. Chris, thanks again for everything. I will let you know when I get her up. Also, don't forget. Next year we will only be an hour and a half flight away so we will definitely be visiting. John DiMartino

Here's a review: ---- Transition Training with Chris Droege As I finished the build of my RV-7A, I felt the need to have some transition training. Although I am a Commercial Pilot with an Instrument Rating and also was a CFII many years ago, I still didn't feel confident to fly a new airplane without some guidance. Of the Trainers closest to my Spokane, Washington location, Chris Droege offered training in an airplane most like the one I built: a RV-7A with Constant Speed Prop on an IO-360 Lycoming engine. It was still an 8-hour drive from Spokane to Nampa, ID, and the only window of decent weather occurred in the early morning. Since the forecast predicted deteriorating conditions after 9 am, Chris agreed to start my training at 6:15 am. I appreciated the emphasis on safe flying and the establishment of repeatable procedures which become habit patterns. These routines simplify flying and make it safer. Chris concentrated my training where I needed it the most: in takeoffs and landings, and I was able to become proficient during the almost three hours of concentrated practice. As we made our last landing the winds picked up and we knew we had finished just in time. Driving back to Spokane, I was met with driving rain and hail. All in all, it was an excellent experience and I would gladly recommend Chris's services to other builders. ---- I'm planning to do my first flight tomorrow afternoon! I'll let you know how it goes. Best regards, Leonard Westermeyer

As an older guy pilot (75) with only C-172 time, I had a bit of anxiety about the different flight characteristics of my RV. So I contacted Chris and went to Nampa in early January 2022 for transition training in his RV-7A which is identical to mine. Chris's two-day transition course was exactly what I was looking for. Chris has a training method that is simple and logical, and it worked perfectly for me. He drills home the most important flight parameters that you need to focus on for successful takeoff and landing, and for inflight maneuvering. He does the training in a very structured step-by-step format -- with each step going through air speed, power setting, climb rate, descent rate, approach procedures -- that you will not forget. All of this is very well explained in the POH that Chris has posted on his website. The repetition is good and very effective. I can say that Chris's methodology guarantees that you will easily transition to flying your own RV, which I successfully did a week later. Very happy! I highly recommend Chris's transition training. John Bell Reno, NV
I just completed my RV7A transition training with Chris Droege in Nampa, Idaho and I couldn't be more pleased with the training I received in my short time there! Chris is extremely knowledgable about his aircraft and has vast experience with different kinds of airplanes. I really appreciated his structure and teaching style as well his attention to the particular needs that I had as a fairly new and inexperienced pilot. He took the time to fully answer any questions I had and tailored his teaching to my particular areas of need. I also appreciated his humor and flexibility. So happy I chose him to teach me about the intricacies of flying his amazing bird and highly recommend him to anyone who wishes to experience flying such a fun, fast, and responsive machine. I'm still on Cloud 9 and am hoping to find my very own RV7A soon, knowing that I will be able to fly it with the skill that's required to stay safe while flying this little sports car of the skies! Simply put, your training program far exceeded my expectations. You are easy to work with, disciplined in staying on task and committed to enabling your student with the necessary skills to safely and successfully fly with confidence. Having flown the RV8 tail dragger for some time now I arrived knowing how to "fly" the RV. Having never flown the 7A tricycle gear, I wanted to gain the confidence with "adult supervision" backing me up. I left feeling confident about how to successfully take off and land the 7A, how to protect the nose gear and how to stay on top of the free castering nose gear. An unexpected bonus was your disciplined approach to flying the pattern including getting setup for success miles out including slowing down the aircraft early. Flying to a known set of #'s (MP and RPM) proved to be a repeatable methodology. Thank you for making me a safer and better pilot. I'm looking forward to flying with you again. CHRIS DROEGE' <[email protected]> Sent: Mon, Jul 19, 2021 11:33 am Subject: Transition Training Review I traveled to Boise last month to take transition training with Chris Droege and am extremely happy with the instruction I received. We started out with 2 hours of ground school on Friday to discuss the RV flight characteristics and go over the syllabus for the next two days. Saturday started with taxi practice to get familiar with the castering nosewheel, then we took to the air and flew a number of turns, climbs, and descents to "get familiar with the wing". We then did more air work such as stalls and steep turns followed pattern work. I really liked Chris' approach to practicing takeoffs and landings because rather than stay in the pattern simply doing touch and goes, each loop consisted a realistic approach to the airport. We would climb to an altitude away from the airport, then practice the decent to pattern altitude and speed prior to entering the pattern. Many pilots talk about how hard RVs are to slow down, but getting things set up prior to entering the terminal area makes all the difference. Once in the pattern he emphasized hitting the correct power and flap settings at each phase of the landing, and maintaining a stabilized approach. Things we all were taught in private pilot training but it was a great refresher. And we came to a full stop after each circuit to allow time to debrief the landing and set up for the next take off. Sunday was more pattern work and additional air work such as following a winding road (great fun) to reinforce the instruction from the day before. At the end of the training I felt confident I'm prepared for my first flight. Thanks again Chris, I really enjoyed flying with you! John Armstrong

-----Original Message----- From: Jim <[email protected]> To: J. Chris Droege <[email protected]> Sent: Sun, Jul 12, 2020 4:36 pm Subject: Thank you!! Hi Chris- Here's the story I've told several times about the training I got from you at the end of May: When I was getting close to flying my RV-7A project I had some serious doubts about whether I should make the first flight myself or if I should seek out a more experienced RV pilot to fly it the first time. Common sense told me that having had limited stick time for the previous 10+ years it would be smart to have someone else at the controls. But I didn't want to do that. It's my airplane that I built myself that I've had my hands on every step of the way and I didn't want to be a spectator for the first flight. Besides my insurance company was going to require some dual instruction or 25 hours of RV-7A time for me to be covered. So, besides being a good idea, getting some RV-7A dual was essentially mandatory. I sent a message to the Arizona RV List (a Yahoo list serve for RV enthusiats) asking for any RV CFI recommendations and I got a couple of responses from some local guys - one of whom said that "Chris Droege in Idaho gave the best flight instruction I've ever received". I contacted several of the CFIs listed on Vans website for RV instruction and Chris's reply was warm and accommodating and helpful- "We'll make it work with whatever schedule you have! Let's pick some dates." We had to reschedule the training once due to time and a less than favorable weather forecast. Chris was totally accommodating and eventually my wife and our grandson and I made the 1100-mile long drive from Tucson, Arizona to Nampa, Idaho. Over the course of 2 days, I received the best flight instruction I've ever gotten. Flying with Chris was a lot of fun. But he was a taskmaster on doing things the same way every time and being safe and making good choices. We practiced emergency procedures and stalls and unusual attitudes and he gave me some general exercises to do at home to polish my RV flying skills. Every pilot has heard all about sight pictures and not looking at the instruments all the time - using outside references instead - and being precise and smooth but Chris really drove it home and he truly changed the way I fly. I'm now a much better pilot because of the time I spent with him. In addition to learning how to fly an RV, Chris spent time going over some really helpful information about living and travelling with an RV and how to survive the DAR inspection and some key points about good record keeping for the plane I had built. As a first time owner, builder, repairman, this was an expected bonus. After those two days with Chris I felt very confident flying my own plane on the first flight which happened a couple weeks after I got back to Tucson. It went perfectly and there was no nerves or stress on my part. I just had confidence that I knew what to do and it was like every other time I've flown: I'm back home in the air in the airplane I built with my own hands. Here's a video and a couple of photos... Thanks for everything!

So the first flight was a test of the plane and also my nerves, all went well and I owe that to the training you provided. Plane flew straight and level and did not require any aileron trim, to which I was surprised. again, Thank you Ken Hitt Meyer Sign & Advertising 2608 Hwy 99 S. As I am a former Navy instructor pilot, I appreciated how you focused on the parameters (airspeed, altitudes, configuration and power settings) that will eventually become muscle memory. At the same time you were very flexible adapting to the different training that I might need as I fly big airplanes for a living. CHRIS DROEGE <[email protected]> Sent: Mon, Dec 17, 2018 6:06 pm Subject: Flight training experience Chris, Thank you once again for the very excellent flight training. I deliberated for a considerable amount of time, whether it would be of much befit and whether it would be " worth the cost". The answer, in hind-sight, is a resounding ABSOLUTELY! I think that, as pilots, we typically become accustomed to accepting slightly greater risks as normal. We owe it to ourselves, our friends and loved ones, to not let this acceptance get out of hand. Isn't this the reason that we pre-flight our planes? We're in one of the most amazing countries in the world; one that allows us to build a machine that will take us where we want to go, when we want to go. We're also alive during an amazing time, one that will allow us to do this at 200 miles per hour. This also gives us a responsibility to future generations; to not mess it up for them.We are now very fortunate that it's no longer necessary to teach ourselves how to fly an RV. We can now learn from others, such as yourself. I feel much safer for having taken your course; I'm much higher up on the learning curve, so to speak. Flying a plane that has never flown before, powered by an engine that has only run a few hours on the ground has enough risks. By careful, thoughtful construction and pre-flight testing, I tried to minimize these risks as much as possible. That left the biggest variable, the pilot, as the only factor where risk reduction had not been fully implemented, until now. I very much appreciate you putting yourself out there to teach people, such as myself, how to do things "the right way". On top of that, I had a blast doing it. I've attached a couple photos of my 7A. It's waiting for the pilot / static (411) test and the Transponder cert. (413) then I'll make the appointment with the DAR. Flying with you has helped to renew my enthusiasm for continuing "the process". I'll drop a line before heading out to Oshkosh next year and hope to meet up with you again, over there. If you find yourself in the Denver area before then, give a call. 'Til then, keep in touch. Take care, Carl A. Boecher

The time I spent down there was critical in getting me comfortable handling this plane. You found that balance! I think you have a real talent for assessing a pilots skill level and meeting him where he is. Your tips on paperwork preparation for the FAA was very helpful as was our conversation about engine break-in. I knew I was getting my money's worth before we ever got into the airplane! In summary as a result of the time you spent I checked off a bunch of items on my "What Do I Do Next Checklist". I was able to satisfy most of the items that had LARGE QUESTION marks after them. Well it went very well. The flying you taught me was perfect. Fixing and solving a few minor mechanical squawks has taken a few hours and additional flights to solve. I now how 7 hours on the airplane. I'm still breaking in the engine, though after my last flight my CHT are starting to come down. I have enclosed a recommendation letter about my training experience with you. You taught me well for which I thank you very much! Randall Eaker RV-7A N183RE -- Randall Eaker [email protected] Chris Droege RV transition training was one of the best investments of time and money that I could have made to ensure my first flight in my newly built RV-7A would be successful. The first couple of hours of training are hanger flying. He explains the flying characteristics of the RV, and then asked questions to ensure I had a 100% understanding about how the airplane is to be flown. Even though we followed the checklist, memorizing take off, approach and landing speeds helped my confidence during these procedures. Flight training consists of flying the basic maneuvers that were learned in primary flight training. With the expectations that each maneuver is flown smoothly with altitude and speed maintained. Once these skills were successfully demonstrated he had some fun and exciting flying maneuvers that he allowed me to fly. Chris expects excellence which is what a new RV pilot needs to successfully and safely fly the airplane. His teaching style is positive and encouraging. Even though the instruction is intense he knows how to make it fun. After a successful maneuver he will reach over and give a "High Five". Before my first flight in my RV-7A, I hanger flew my airplane to the same exact standards as Chris had taught me. I felt prepared and I knew that if I flew my airplane the way Chris taught me that my first flight would be a success. My first flight was as successes as I rated my first landing as perfect! I highly recommend Chris Droege as an RV Training Flight Instructor! Randall Eaker

The flight consisted of 30 minutes of circling the airport at about 1000' above TPA. The airplane flew straight and had no noticeable tendency to a heavy wing. When it came time to land, there was a momentary issue with the flaps which would not lower. After fiddling with it for a few seconds, the flaps started working again. I haven't solved the issue yet, but I think what happened is my Vertical Power circuit breakers will turn off if it thinks the switch is stuck. It is likely that I left the flap switch in the up position after the flaps were retracted following take off. Then the Vertical power box timed out on the flap up switch input. The Vertical power box then resets its circuit breaker after I move the switch to down and when that didn't work back to neutral. It's just a theory. I don't really have any way to know since the flaps are working fine now. The flap outage only lasted about ten seconds before I realized they were working again. The issue didn't affect my approach in any appreciable way. I made a near perfect landing thanks to your training. My Garmin video indicates I crossed the threshold at 76kts. Just a bit higher than I intended but very workable as it turned out. Regarding my review of your training, it has been posted to my blog at: roughandreadyaerospace.blogspot.com/2016/07/step-143-transition-training.html

I really appreciated you taking the time to identify key elements to consider when buying an RV. I would recommend you and your program to anyone considering flying RVs. Thanks again.! Clair

Hi Chris, Here is a short write-up for your web site: I enjoyed the transition training in Chris' RV-7A and found it was best flying instruction I have had. His course was well thought out and included the items that are needed to safely and effectively fly an RV-7A. I found the combination of ground work, flight time and review was the right mix to take me from an RV builder, with no RV pilot in command time, to a competent RV pilot. The documentation, airplane, hangar, fuel and airport access were all ready ahead of time. This allowed us to concentrate on the training without being distracted by the myriad of other task that creep into everyday flying. Chris assessed my flying ability and adjusting the flying instruction to match my skill level. We spent additional time on items that I struggle to do well and quickly moved on from task that I showed competency. For me, the training took me from imagining what my first flight in my RV-7A would be like to knowing what to expect in all phases of the first 40 hours of test flying. I would recommend transition training for pilots that have not flown an RV. And Chris is an excellent choice if you should decide you need transition training. Thank you, Peter Wells RV-7A Builder, Pilot N567PJ [email protected]

I highly recommend getting transition training but I can't say enough good things about the training that I received from Chris. He is very patient, laid-back and teaches to your style of learning. He takes the time to ensure that you understand the concept that he is teaching. He truly wants you to be the absolutely best pilot that you can be. His ability to mix up the "fun" flying with the standard maneuvers was awesome. The great thing about mixing it up is that it all intertwined to greatly improve my flying skills. He brought out qualities in my flying that I never knew that I had. We really had a blast flying together and that is what sets Chris apart from other instructors that I have seen. Transitioning into the RV is well....amazing. I got my RV "grin" in Chris's stunning aircraft. The RV is a different animal and takes patience and practice to fly it correctly. It was a true joy to fly that aircraft. And when we were airborne in the early morning hours it was incredible to watch the sun rise and see the amazing colors that were projected onto the clouds. Flying in Idaho is something that I will never forget. This is why we fly. Chris I want you to know that you now reside in my head, "smooth and effortless", "patience", "remember your airspeeds, 90, 80, 70/75" and "take my head off at the threshold". I just want you to know that you are with me on every flight with that same mantra. Just like we practiced. I can't thank you enough for the wonderful hospitality that you, Nan and Piper showed me. Please tell Nan and Piper I said hello. I will get you some pictures soon. Just never remember to take pictures as I am having too much fun! If there is ever anything I can do for you please let me know. Russ RV-8A, N306R

I passed my inspection last Thursday without a hitch and spent that evening and Friday putting the plane back together. I was going to fly it Friday afternoon but had some issues with fouled plugs. I finally removed all the plugs and cleaned them thoroughly but by then the wind had come up so I put off the first flight until Saturday morning. Not my first choice because Saturday mornings at Ogden airport are busy with parachutists in the area where I wanted to do my first flight. However, the conditions were otherwise perfect, so I pointed her down 34 and pushed the ball to the wall. I must say the pucker factor was high but you taught me well and she lifted off perfectly and away we went. She flies like a dream, straight and level with basically no trim. I flew about 40 minutes and returned to the pattern only to have the tower tell me to extend my down wind and they'd call my base because they had a jet landing on a crossing runway. Just what I wanted for my first landing in a new bird, a non-standard approach. I flew her down to the numbers just like we practiced and I greased her on like I'd done it a million times. Probably better than any of the landings I did at KONO! (or maybe I have a good imagination). The training I did with you gave me the confidence I needed to make my first flight successful and I'm so glad I decided to get the transition training! It made everything seem easy on my first flight and I wasn't worried about how to fly it. I just went out and did what we practiced. In retrospect, I can't imagine doing a first flight without training. Even though I have a lot of flight time, none of it was in RVs. Although I wouldn't say the RV is hard to fly, it is definitely different than the Piper and Cessna aircraft I have most of my time in. I have 4 flights and about 5 hours on her now. See the RV grin in attached photo. Thanks again for sharing your experience and aircraft with me. The training was worth every penny. If you make it down this way skiing give us a call. Otherwise I'll see you at Oshkosh next year. Brad N957BW

As far as testimonials and advertising are concerned, well, let's just say that I am right in the middle of documenting my experience in my article for our chapter newsletter this month, and it is all good. My only regret is that I took absolutely no pictures of the experience, and I am beating myself up a bit for that. It all just happened so fast! I have been amazed at the large amount of information that I have managed to recall from the experience - everything from the ground sessions to the flight sessions, including all the pre and post briefing discussions. There was so much awesome info conveyed in those sessions that I am currently documenting all of it so that I don't forget it all later on. Thanks so much for building and maintaining such a fantastic airplane! She was a real joy to fly. I can't even begin to tell you how good it felt to get back in a high-performing aircraft again. Your meticulous nature in record keeping and the way that you fly and teach are very similar to my own, so I really appreciated that as well. The training you gave me was great. Exactly what I needed to take the apprehension out of our first flight. Not to mention not having to figure out the right way to land a 7 because its wing is different than the 10 & 12 I flew most recently and had to figure out on my own. I went to all of the ABS training when I had my S35 Bonanza some 20 years ago and yours is every bit as good. ABS training is arguably the best available outside of my military training. I was equally impressed with yours. I didn't do that training because of an insurance requirement. I did it to stretch the envelope of the airplane and to become more proficient. Although I took your course because insurance required it, I probably would have done so anyway as everyone needs to do more than just go from A to B. I have the same attitude with the 7 as I did with the S35 and all my military experience. One point I'd like to make and thank you for is that you & perhaps others went through the trouble to be able to train in an experimental airplane. That must have been a genuine catch 22 when insurance required dual training that was basically illegal to pay someone to give and you went through the effort to make it available legally. Van's owes you. Your fee is very fair, too, by the way. I'll send you the cert info this evening as I don't have it with me at the moment. All the best to you and Nan. Happy flying. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Just finished up a couple great days with Chris (PK) Droege. Wednesday night, after flying commercial into Boise (an easy 84 minutes from SFO), I met Chris and his extremely cool RV7a in their glistening, heated, KONO hangar. (49 minutes from Boise in the rental car). We sat down for 1.5 of ground mixed in with another 1.5 of get-ta-know-ya and by the end of our three-hour intro we had plans for our next two days of flying. Chris is a conscientious and methodical instructor. Moreover he is patient, caring and explicitly concerned that his teaching is effective and comfortable for each unique student. Collectively, these redeeming features make for a very high-yielding experience. I learned much about the RV7a but I learned much about my own flying as well. After Chris's training, I feel like I'm a better pilot than I have ever been. Furthermore, I believe it impossible to endure Chris's rigor without having an absolutely fabulous time. Finding confidence and control in an RV7a; flying canyons; twirl whirly; Oh yeah... :-D Big Fun in the Boise Valley - which deserves mention as well. The geography is particularly well suited to the training exercise... and we had ridiculously perfect weather as well. Severe clear and a billion on day one and some good wind the next day for the perfect challenge of newly acquired skills from the day before. Another nice touch, Chris. I spent two days with Chris Droege learning to fly an RV, and what a program it was. We first reviewed the paperwork and the needed knowledge, both about the plane itself and about the process of certification. He has indeed had experience there. Then, we spent 5 hours flying the RV 7A. Starting with just getting to understand the "feel", we then went to maneuvers, including stalls, steep turns and landing. Just what I needed. Now, when I finish the RV8 in a few weeks, I will feel MUCH more confident on taking it up for the first time. If you are starting to fly, or especially if you are going to be flying an RV for the first time, take a look at the web site; https://www.letsflyrvtraining.com. Thanks Chris for all you have done for me!! Paul Collins MD It flew!! Thanks for the help!!! The next 40 hours will be FUN. Paul Collins The training was ABSOLUTELY helpful!! I will never understand how someone would fly a plane like this for the first time without any training. It was FAST (>200) when I went through the engine settings. I have a LOT to learn, but this first flight was actually "Ho-Hum", nervous, but no surprises, except for the speed. Wow, much more than a Husky. The tower at Boise was a lot of help too. I chose Chris Droege for that training. The entire experience was fantastic, from making the arrangements to the ground instruction and finally flight instruction Chris provided. It was perhaps the best fixed wing training I have ever had. Chris has a program that intermingles maneuvers and procedures with pure fun flying that helps the pilot master the aircraft. A word of advice, my insurance company told me I did not need transition training due to my experience, that in my opinion was pure nonsense contrary to aviation safety. It was great flying over the last weekend and I enjoyed it immensely. The pics I provided are just for your curiosity really... just to show you what I got and where I'm at with it. Here's my testimonial: I would highly recommend Chris Droege for your RV transition training. In fact, if you don't want to do official transition training, at least try to fly with him to get the real facts about the capability of the airplane and it's safety design factors. He'll show you everything the plane can accomplish and its limitations. Chris also has a great attitude with a low stress demeanor about himself, which goes into the training, so that a complete understanding can transfer from him to yourself. It's NOT a check-ride, it's another builder/instructor showing you safely, what to expect when you're ready to fly your own airplane. The area he trains in allows you to see a number of different environmental factors that affects the plane, from low flat areas up to hills with wind currents, to small narrow airfields with obstacles. It really makes you comfortable in operating the RV and gives you complete confidence in your ability to fly your own craft. He focuses on smoothness, keeping ahead of the airplane until it becomes second nature... but more importantly on safety. I would say Chris is the top choice amongst any of the transition training instructors... it's a small price to pay for its true value! 70-70-70 I would love to fly with you again one day... maybe next time we can do formation training, with you in your airplane and me in mine! A bit about me: prior F-111 pilot, current CFI/CFII, and about 4000 total hours. Before visiting Chris, I had about 6-7 hours in friend's RV-7A aircraft, but no landings. Chris started out the morning with a professional DUATS briefing, discussion of our flying backgrounds, review of the aircraft logs, and preflight. On our two rides, we worked on getting to know the airpane which included several level turns, steep turns (45 degree and just shy of 60 degrees), stalls, turns around a point, climbs, descents, and flight at various speeds. He placed an emphasis on getting to know the airplane and benchmarking pitch and power settings for the various flight regimes. We returned to the Ontario Oregon (KONO) airport for numerous patterns to full stop landings. Chris provided many very good techniques for flying the pattern, keeping speed under control (in the very slick airplane), and flaring. We also accomplished several soft field takeoffs and several simulated engine out landings. KONO is a great place to fly out of with a newly refinished 5000' runway, several other airstrips within 30 miles, not much traffic, and some great wide-open spaces to practice maneuvers. KONO also has a private warbird collection of Merle Maines that includes a T-33, F-4, F-111, A-7, and Mig-21--all parked on the ramp, that is well worth visiting. Thanks Chris for the great training. The plane flew great with the only squawk being the flaps blew a fuse halfway through flight, so I needed to make a no-flap landing. Still turned off easily after 2000 feet of runway in front of several "highly critical" USAF Edwarfds AFB test pilots. The plane flew perfectly and I thank you for your help in the training. I had been away from small airplanes for a while, but what better way to come back than roaming the skies of Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho in his beautiful RV-7A. Flying with Chris is not only fun, but a very good value as well. His experience and syllabus for learning to "speak RV" will help pilots of all levels of experience get up to speed quickly, and with a big smile on your face! Bob Wolf, B737 Capt., Boise, Idaho

Your knowledge and friendly manner made the training day a great success. The immaculate condition of your RV7A and its hangar certainly added to the positive aspect of the overall training. A worthy goal for my own airplane. I will be more than happy to be a good reference for your program if the need ever arises. Will work hard on the glideslope and flare techniques you showed me. Thanks again, Gary Hamilton

For insurance purposes, I needed a few hours of training by a qualified instructor. I found Chris through Van's website. Chris was easy to work with, an excellent flight instructor, and patient in teaching me the fundamentals of controlling a high performance aircraft. I highly recommend Chris to anyone needing training in the Van's RV-7A aircraft. Steve Cary Idaho Falls, ID

Hi Chris,
It is very nice and useful that i had taken the RV transition program that you had customized for new RV builders or owners I can say that what you are doing is a great service that is an excellent fit for any RV builder or any new RV pilot.
Cheers

Yours Aye,
Steve
